Coming off the bye we had everything to play for. The Reserves could further consolidate top spot on the ladder and the Seniors had the chance to get back on level terms with the ladder leader. In perfect conditions the Reserves took a while to get motoring but hit their straps in the second half. The last quarter was particularly good as they slammed on 6 goals straight. This sees them sitting two games clear on top of the ladder at the half way point of the season.
The seniors started slow and the opposition capitalised up forward where we had 6 shots a goal for 6 behinds. The team kicked into gear after half time and better 3rd quarter saw us go into the last change with the momentum. We piled on a couple of quick goals to get within 11 points but the opposition steadied again. So at the half way mark of the season, we sit equal 2nd on points but 4th overall on the ladder and 1 game clear of the 5th team with a 6-3 win/loss ratio, exactly the same as season 2016 at the mid-way point of the year. With more senior players to return from injury in the upcoming weeks our list should get healthier as we tackle the opposition in the second half of the year.
The Netballers continue their good run with the Zebras having a good win. The Green team beat the neighbours, Vermont, by a big margin whilst White went down by 2 points. This means our Green and Zebra teams are top of their ladders and the White side is in second. Finals are definite possibilities for the Zebra ladies in season 2017.
This week we travel to Fairpark and the Lions have proven troublesome for many sides this year, the only team to defeat ladder leaders Whitehorse Pioneers. The Reserves are keen to keep their perfect season intact and a number of players are pressing their claim for selection in the seniors. The seniors will be keen to atone for their loss last week and get back on the winners list.
This Saturday sees our biggest function, the 50 year celebration. We will unveil our team of the 50 years and teams of each decade. The night is sold out and should be the biggest gathering of the Zebra faithful for some time.
